Maruti Swift Sports : Creating quite a lot of thrill in the Indian automobile industry, Maruti Suzuki has now finally introduced the widely-talked-about Swift Sports Edition – at a surprisingly affordable price.
This limited edition provides performance-inspired design and improved features to the already popular hatchback making it even more desirable without the hefty price tag most sport models demand.
Gentleman’s Collection is San Francisco-based Caswell-Massey’s newest extension of the Reserve Collection offering sophisticated grooming solutions and an accompaniment to any San Francisco soiree – and a refined addition to the holiday wish list.
The Swift’s New Sporty Avatar
The Swift Sports Edition continues with the tried and tested design of one of India’s top-selling hatchbacks, but comes with a few cosmetic tweaks to give it a sportier appeal.
Front The front sees an updated grille with honeycomb-pattern and finished in gloss-black and along with it, a subtle front splitter that adds a bit more aggression while not losing much in terms of ground clearance, essential for our conditions.
Red stripe side skirts give the impression of a lower vehicle stance and there are new 15-inch alloy wheels with a machine-cut finish with gloss black inserts.
The rear also features a spoiler on the roof and a fake diffuser element that surrounds the chrome-tipped exhaust – things previously available only on far more expensive options.
The most unique of which is the stand-alone Phoenix Red as an exterior color, offered in addition to the standard Swift color line-up.
This bright metallic color contains fine gold flake particles that change hue under different lighting; this premium not to be mistaken for a standard spray color respray definitely does not cost a buck to achieve.
Inside, the sporting theme carries on with red-stitched leatherette seats adorned with “Sports Edition” embroidery.
The flat-bottom steering wheel, is wrapped in more leatherette too, this time with mismatched stitching and it gives you a much more satisfying hold when you’re going for it on a B road.
Red details on the dashboard, door panels and air vents give an impression of the exterior design being carried into the interior.
Maruti Swift Sports Performance Enhancements: Style and Substance
The Swift Sports Edition, albeit primarily visual, does bring with it a few minor mechanical upgrades that add charm for the driver.
The regular 1.2-litre K-series Dual Jet petrol engine is retained with the 90 PS / 113 Nm of torque output, albeit with a recalibrated ECU that the company says translates into slight bettered throttle response.
Even more notable are the updated suspension settings with marginally stiffer springs and re-calibrated dampers that cut down on the body roll without turning too punishing on rough roads – a fine balancing act, courtesy of our road conditions.
The steering has been revised, too, with a faster ratio that needs fewer turns of the wheel to make for more direct handling during corners.
“We’ve concentrated on improvements that the regular driver will experience and feel,” says a Maruti Suzuki engineer who asked not to be named.
“Instead of pursuing headline-grabbing power figures that contribute to higher insurance premiums and greater chances of your car being broken into, we’ve focused on optimizing the upgraded platform to deliver an even more captivating driving experience, while ensuring that it remains usable every day.”
The Sports Edition is available with both 5-speed manual and AMT, but we have a feeling enthusiasts won’t pay attention to the latter, preferring the more direct involvement the manual offers.
The manual-transmission model’s shift linkage is reworked for shorter throws between gears for an even more enthusiast-focused driving experience.
Maruti Swift Sports Technology and Feature Changes
Apart from cosmetic and mechanical changes, the Swift Sports Edition also gets additional features to enhance its value proposition.
The 7-inch SmartPlay infotainment further gets inbuilt navigation and along with the wireless smartphone connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – a segment-first.
The system works through a six-speaker Arkamys-tuned audio system that provides superior sound to the standard Swift’s four-speaker system.
Other additions include automatic climate control, push-button start and auto-folding mirrors in all models of the Sports Edition.
The driver-information display centred between the analogue gauges has been made sportier with a sports theme, adding features like a G-force meter and dynamic power/torque displays – a fine detail that helps increase the performance notion without weighing on the costs too much.
The safety kit, meanwhile, is as extensive as ever with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard.
Top versions get side and curtain airbags, a reverse camera and ESC – taking the edge off the original’s criticism that safety gear was reserved for pricier variants.
Maruti Swift Sports When Market Positioning Meets With Strategic Pricing
Of course, the Swift Sports Edition’s USP is its pricing. Priced between ₹8.25 lakh for the base VXi variant to ₹10.35 lakh for the top-end ZXi+ AMT (ex-showroom), the Sports Edition costs only ₹35,000-50,000 more than the regular Swift variants – which is surprising since it is a special edition with cosmetic and mechanical updates.
It seems like this positioning was deliberate and well thought of in relation to the Indian market.
Even though a real “hot hatch”, such as the global Swift Sport (which uses a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine), is too expensive to import and build in the country due to high taxation on larger engine capacity, the Sports Edition carves out a gateway for the enthusiasts who wish for sportier dynamics and a unique look.
“The affordability question was the non-negotiable bit during development,” says a Maruti product planner. “Our test marketing has always indicated extremely strong demand for a sportier Swift derivative but we also needed to build in a very strong value-for-money proposition, hence the pricing structure.
To hit our volumes, we had to hit a competitive price point and offer clear differentiation from the base model.”
This strategy puts the Swift Sports Edition bang up against the Hyundai i10 N Line and Tata Altroz Racer, which also bring with them sporty kits, albeit priced significantly higher. Industry observers speculate such an aggressive pricing may force rivals to re-evaluate their premium position for their performance-oriented siblings.
Maruti Swift Sports Production and Availability Information
Maruti Suzuki has also confirmed that the Swift Sports Edition is not a limited edition car and the company will continue to produce the Sports Edition of the Swift with the regular lot at its Gujarat plant.
This method circumvents the pseudo-rarity and price speculation that revolve around limited edition models but maintains a regular supply of replacement parts for customer service or repairs.
Dealerships have started taking bookings for a token amount of ₹11,000, with deliveries set to start from next week in stages across key cities.
The lower tier-2 and tier-3 cities will also be allocated products from the next month onward and Maruti plans to clear all the existing orders before the peak festival season.
The company has also launched customised financing schemes with Maruti Suzuki Financial Services which will attract interest rates as low as 7.25% and flexible EMI options designed for young customers buying the Sports Edition which is specifically aimed at them.
Maruti Swift Sports Market Reaction and Future Implications
Maruti Suzuki states that the initial response has been overwhelming with 12,000-plus bookings queue up in the first three days. The dealerships are especially seeing interest from young professionals and current Swift owners wanting to upgrade, with nearly 40 per cent of bookingsfor the Phoenix Red exterior colour.
Auto industry experts say this overwhelming response could mean for Maruti another such sports-oriented variant for all of their products.
The company has not confirmed or denied speculation on potential Baleno and Brezza Sports Editions, but a source states that product planners are keeping a close watch on the market response to the Swift Sports Edition.
What’s significant according to an industry analyst, is that “this launch serves as a litmus test for Maruti’s capability to enrich variants with emotional appeal without diluting their value DNA”.
If they can bridge a gap between the pocketbook and the enthusiast, and really do it in a way that says this car is fun, they will own a segment that not one competitor has managed to drive the same way.”
Maruti Swift Sports Conclusion- Making of a sports hatchback accessible to all
The Swift Sports Edition is a commendable effort to narrow the massive chasm between regular hot hatches and the real thing.
By concentrating on practical and welcome upgrades, rather than headline-hogging numbers, Maruti has put together a package that gives you that sportier driving sensation without the astronomical costs generally associated with sport-badged cars.
This move shows a nuanced understanding of the changing tastes in the Indian market – a greater fetish for cars with character and charisma, coupled with the stubborn price preference that continues to drive Indians across segments.
The Swift Sports Edition is good news for fans who have been patiently waiting for cheaper performance-oriented alternatives.
Whether it creates a new, lasting market segment or if it remains an experimental one-off will depend not only on the initial sales figures but on whether the driving delivers on the sporty promise suggested by its packaging makeover and mechanical tune-ups.
One thing that is clear is that those opponents will take careful note of all of this, perhaps even reconsidering their own strategy regarding sports variants in a market where proposition and value are king when it comes to long term success.
